Sami Makkonen is a visual artist who has worked professionally in comics since 2008, with approximately 3,000 published pages to his credit. His most recent graphic novels include Verikyyhky (Like, 2026), Sielujen kutoja (Like, 2024), Hevosjumala (Like, 2022), and the monumental 300-page Kalevala (Otava, 2019; Like, 2020), followed by a special anniversary edition published by Like in 2025. Makkonen’s graphic novels have been translated and published in several countries.

Between 2008 and 2016, Makkonen illustrated twelve graphic novels published in the United States, including Deadworld (IDW Publishing) and Hatter M (Automatic Pictures). His other work includes Ryse: Son of Rome, a digital interactive comic project commissioned by Microsoft in conjunction with the release of the video game; cover art for Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: The Dark Watch comic series (BOOM! Studios, 2012); and album artwork for artists including Insomnium. Makkonen has also created artwork for Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering franchise, published by Wizards of the Coast.
